The status of the state that feeds the entire country from the Indian state of Punjab can be snuffed out soon. Madhya Pradesh has been ranked first in terms of wheat yield this time, while in the case of paddy, Madhya Pradesh has already surpassed Punjab.

The main reason for this is the increasing trend towards crop diversity of the farmers of Punjab because this year the state has crossed the target of 125 lakh tonnes of wheat in the Rabi season. In the Rabi season, Madhya Pradesh has moved ahead of Punjab in wheat procurement this time with a slight difference, which has certainly increased the enthusiasm of Madhya Pradesh government.

127 lakh 67 thousand 628 tonnes of wheat has been procured in Madhya Pradesh, while in Punjab, wheat procurement figures have been 127.67 lakhs. This is satisfactory for the Punjab government because the government had set a target of 125 lakh tonnes of procurement, whereas the purchase has been more than that. Nevertheless, Madhya Pradesh has overtaken Punjab in wheat procurement this year.

Apart from this, for many years, the bad effect of weather deteriorating in the harvesting season in Punjab is affecting wheat and paddy crops. Meanwhile, in view of the problem of groundwater, the state government is also trying to divert the farmers towards low water crops. There is a continuous decline in the area of wheat and paddy in the state. The state government has reduced the area under paddy to 20 lakh hectare from last year's 23 lakh hectare for the latest Kharif season. Agriculture director SK Ari says that under crop diversity, cultivation of maize or cotton is being encouraged instead of paddy. However, the emphasis is on increasing basmati cultivation in Punjab.
