Flood-like situation in Punjab, Government issues alert

Chandigarh: Many districts of Punjab are under flood due to heavy rains. There has been a lot of loss of life and property in the state due to flood. Meanwhile, the state government has issued flood warnings in nine districts. The Revenue Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Department of Punjab has sent a letter to the Deputy Commissioners of 9 districts stating that additional water will be released from the Pong Dam after the next 2 days, due to which once again the flood-like conditions may arise in those districts.

The DM-1 branch of the department has sent letters to the Deputy Commissioners of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran Sahib, Moga, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Faridkot and Firozpur districts. The letter said that "By sending a copy of the letter received by the Bhakra Beas Management Board, Talwara Township, you are informed that in addition to 12000 cusecs of water being released through the turbine in Pong Dam, 14000 cusecs of water will be released through slipway in the next 2 days".

The department has asked the officers of the districts to prepare to deal with the potential loss. Hundreds of villages in 9 districts of the state were flooded due to release of water from Bhakra Dam during the monsoon rains by the BBMB(Bhakra Beas Management Board) last month. The Punjab government is still dealing with this flood and the conditions in the affected areas have not been normalized yet. Crop houses, cattle and property have suffered heavy damage in the affected areas.
