Chandigarh: Punjab has become the first state to take steps against three agricultural laws passed by the Centre's Modi government. Today, the Congress government of the state introduced three bills in the Assembly led by Captain Amarinder Singh. The three bills introduced by Singh are the Special Provisions of Farmers Production Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) and the Punjab Amendment Bill 2020, the Essential Commodities (Special Provisions and Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2020 and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement, Price Assurance and Agricultural Services (Special Provisions and Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2020.

The bills introduced by the Punjab government said that farmers could be jailed for three years if they buy their crops below the Minimum Support Price (MSP). If a company or a person exerts any pressure on the farmers about land and crop, they may have to be jailed. The bill criticised the centre's laws and said that apart from these bills, the amendments to the agriculture bill are also against farmers and labourers.

Addressing the House, CM Amarinder said agriculture is a state subject, but the Centre ignored it. "I wonder what the Government of India wants to do," he said.
