Punjab Police officials claimed on Wednesday that their counterparts in Jammu and Kashmir recovered two bags containing Rs 1.64 crore in drug money from the Rajouri district in a combined search operation with the Indian Army.

The drug money is reportedly linked to the recovery of 17 kg of heroin by police in Amritsar (Rural) on August 26 after Ranjit Singh, alias Sonu was arrested. To conceal the consignment, Sonu used two specially planned and built chambers installed beneath his Toyota Innova cab. During the investigation, Sonu said he picked up the consignment from drug suppliers Sikander Hayyat, Mansur Hussain, and Zaffar Hussain in the Nowshera district of Jammu and Kashmir.

"A police team from Punjab was deployed to Nowshera after Sonu's inputs, and with the help of Jammu and Kashmir Police, the teams were able to arrest Sikandar and Zaffar on August 29, however, Manzur could not be apprehended at this time," the DGP added.

Later, after Sikandar and Zafar's revelations, Punjab police seized Rs 29.5 lakh in drug money from their Nowshera house,  They also said that on September 4, after Sikander and Zaffar's raid, police found four kilogrammes of heroin hidden in the Innova car.

According to Gupta, the duo revealed the drug money hidden on his property by a third accomplice, Manzur Hussain, after further interrogation." Acting on the inputs provided, the J&K Police along with Indian Army launched a search operation and recovered the cash of Rs 1,64,70,600 from two bags. However, efforts are on to nab Manzur Hussain," he added.
