Punjab police In the past month have detained 255 people for allegedly peddling fake kite strings known as "Chinese manjha," which is illegal. The Punjab police is cracking down on the sale of banned 'Chinese manjha' following a spate of unfortunate incidents during kite flying competitions.

According to Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Sukhchain Singh Gill, who provided information on the actions taken against sellers of the illegal "Chinese manjha" over the course of the past month, police teams have recovered 11,364 "Chinese dor bundles" (kite strings) after filing 234 First Information Reports (FIRs) and detaining 255 suspects.

Notably, 'China dor,' as it is known in Punjab, became twisted around a four-year-old boy's neck and resulted in serious cuts in Samrala in the Ludhiana region, requiring more than 100 stitches on his face.

It happened as the child rolled down the window pane of the car he was travelling in and stuck his head out to see kites being flown. He had to be hospitalised in Ludhiana.

In Amritsar, a 28-year-old man suffered a deep injury over his neck recently because of Chinese string and had to get 20 stitches. The kite string got entangled around his neck while he was on his way to a bank on a motorcycle.
According to a kite store owner, "China dor" is constructed of nylon or synthetic thread and coated with metal and glass dust to make it sharper.

Some kite fans prefer to buy it over cotton strings because it is sharper and less expensive, disregarding the risks.
Meanwhile, the senior police officer said that  Punjab Police have detained 241 drug traffickers/suppliers after filing 173 first information reports (FIRs) around the state over the past week in accordance with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).
