PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen Continue Strong Run at US Open, Reach Quarterfinals

USA: PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen, two of India's top shuttlers, advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open 2023 BWF Super 300 competition in Iowa on Thursday. In the round of 16 of women's singles, Sindhu easily defeated Chinese Taipei's Sung Shuo Yun in two straight sets, 21-14, 21-12.

In contrast, Lakshya defeated Jan Louda of the Czech Republic 21-8, 23-21 in his men's singles second-round match, according to Olympics.com. Sindhu, the No. 12 player in the world, got off to a shaky start but eventually found her groove. Sung Shuo Yun was put on the back foot as soon as the Indian badminton player gained the lead, 13-5.

The shuttler from Chinese Taipei was unable to counter Sindhu's excellent play, which ended the opening game and gave her the lead.

In the second game, PV Sindhu and Sung Shuo Yun immediately engaged in a head-to-head battle as both shuttlers sought to take command of the contest. Sung Shuo Yun was unable to match PV Sindhu's intensity as the Indian drew away for a comfortable lead as the match went on. In 37 minutes, PV Sindhu won five straight points to end the game.

In the final eight, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will face off against Chinese competitor Gao Fang Jie. The Indian shuttler's record versus the Chinese shuttler is 1-3 in their meetings.

Earlier in the day, Lakshya Sen, seeded third in the tournament, found his momentum early on and comfortably pocketed the first game.

The second game, in which Lakshya Sen fell behind Jan Louda 19-14, proved to be a far tougher test. The badminton player from India came back to tie the match at 19 all. Lakshya Sen maintained his composure until the match's suspenseful conclusion and won the 39-minute contest.

Lakshya Sen, the 2022 Commonwealth Games winner, will compete against fellow countryman S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian, who overcame Israel's Misha Zilberman, in the quarterfinals 21-18, 21-23, 21-13.

Earlier there were reports that the two-time Olympic medalist in women's singles, seeded third, Sindhu would be aiming to win her first title of the season. Sindhu is about to start her campaign against the qualifiers. Sindhu had made it to the final of the Madrid Spain Masters earlier this year and will enter the tournament on the back of a semi-final finish in Canada. Former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand has been seeded top and was placed in Sindhu.

Sindhu and Intanon also featured players like second seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan, fourth seed Beiwen Zheng and eighth seed Line Kristofferson. Rutvika Shivani Gadde will open her campaign against Lin Siang Ti of Chinese Taipei.
