The Quad alliance remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region, according to officials from the White House. They emphasized that their focus has not diminished despite various global challenges.
The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, commonly known as QUAD, is an informal strategic forum that brings together four major democracies: the United States, India, Australia, and Japan. Established in response to growing geopolitical challenges, QUAD aims to enhance cooperation on security, economic issues, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Josh Rubin, National Security Council Director for Indo-Pacific Affairs, addressed concerns during a press briefing. He responded to questions about whether the Quad has become less assertive, particularly regarding pressing issues in the South China Sea, and if the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has shifted focus away from the Indo-Pacific.
Rubin clarified that the Quad is actively prioritizing maritime security, which is a key concern for many countries in the region. “The Quad is stepping up to ensure that nations have the capacity to monitor activities within their exclusive economic zones. We are working in partnership with these countries on issues that matter to them, including the South China Sea and East China Sea,” he said.
He noted that this year’s Quad leaders' statement contained some of the strongest language to date regarding challenges in the South China Sea and the provocations from North Korea. “You can expect the Quad to continue standing up for a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” Rubin asserted.
Additionally, Nancy Izzo Jackson, Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs, reinforced that the war in Ukraine has not diverted attention from the Indo-Pacific. She pointed to the numerous high-level meetings as evidence of their commitment to the region. “We are focused on promoting an open, safe, and prosperous Indo-Pacific,” Jackson stated.
