In a major victory, BJP candidate Smriti Irani defeated Congress president Rahul Gandhi by a margin of 55,120 votes in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. Irani took to Instagram to celebrate her victory by sharing a Game of Thrones meme.
Irani, who is well known for her meme game on the social media application, took to Instagram to share a Game of Thrones-inspired meme to celebrate her victory. The photo simply read, "The North Remembers".
As early trends in the counting of votes on Thursday indicated that Gandhi was trailing behind Irani, Twitter users shared GoT-inspired memes and compared Irani to Arya Stark and Kingslayer. Many social media users drew parallels between her and Sansa Stark and called her the "Queen in the North".
"The North Remembers" is a common phrase used in the fantasy drama by Northerners. It means that they do not forget the events of the past easily, especially betrayals. A woman in the Battle of the Bastards said the phrase to Sansa Stark to remind her that there were Stark supporters in Winterwell who would not forget Bonton's betrayal at the Red Wedding. The phrase was also the name of the first episode of the second season of the drama in which Ned Stark was executed.

Irani gave a tough fight to the Congress chief as she campaigned extensively in the constituency for the general elections. She had also mocked Gandhi for failing to reach Amethi on the day of polling, as the Congress chief was busy with other electoral commitments.
