Radiocarbon dating facility has been set up at Mangalore University

A facility for Carbon-14 dating of archaeological artefacts or material of biogenic origin based on Liquid Scintillation Counting technique has been established in the Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity (CARER) at Mangalore University. Carbon-14 dating is a strong method for determining the age of an object containing organic material by using the radiocarbon property, a radioactive isotope of carbon.

The amount of Carbon-14 in a sample from a piece of wood or a fragment of bone , gives information to calculate the death of the animal or plant. The Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has extended the financial support for this facility. BRNS has sanctioned a project to study the standard method for C-14 measurements in the locality of nuclear plants for CARER, it is in collaboration with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai.

The CARER is an advanced centre for radioecological and radiation protection research in the country and has established collaborations with many advanced laboratories of the world. The research needs of various research groups from national laboratories/institutions/universities are well served by the CARER.
