New Delhi: There is a possibility of elections for the Congress Working Committee (CWC) in the plenary session to be held in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. At the same time, Congress strategists are thinking of bringing a proposal to keep former president Rahul Gandhi and former PM Manmohan Singh as members of CWC for life through a constitutional amendment. Let us inform you that a plenary session of Congress is proposed in Raipur from 24 to 26 February.
Meanwhile, speculation is rife in political corridors that this time, after 1997, elections will be held for the CWC, the most important decision-making body of the Congress party. Elections are held for 12 posts in the 25-member committee. In this, apart from the head of the Congress Parliamentary Party and the party president, 11 members are nominated by the Speaker. However, Rahul Gandhi has been opposing to being a nominated member. Now a proposal has come before the Constitution Amendment Committee by the Congress that leaders like Rahul and Manmohan Singh, who have held important positions in the past, should be considered ex-officio members. That is, the former party president and former PM do not have to contest elections and they get a place in the CWC. However, whether this proposal will be accepted or not, will be decided in the session of Raipur. Party spokesperson Pawan Kheda says that the steering committee will take a decision on the first day of the plenary session. Accordingly, a decision will be taken on the proposal.
However, the party president also has the right to nominate 11 members through which he can appoint Rahul and Manmohan Singh as members of the CWC. At the same time, in the case of CWC elections, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra can contest from the Gandhi family. Apart from this, many big Congress leaders including Digvijay Singh, Shashi Tharoor, and Pawan Kheda are also seen in line to contest the elections. As per the Congress constitution, Sonia Gandhi being the chairperson of the parliamentary party, and Mallikarjun Kharge being the party president are automatically included in the CWC.
