NEW DELHI: The Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was given bail by a Surat sessions court until April 13 after being given a two-year prison term for making a derogatory statement in 2019. Rahul Gandhi appealed the decision after a political uproar was caused by the conviction and suspension from the Lok Sabha.

Purnesh Modi's statement described Rahul Gandhi's filing of his petition with a group of party leaders as an act of "extraordinary arrogance." Rahul Gandhi was also labelled a "repeat offender" by the Gujarat BJP leader, who cited 11 cases of criminal defamation and one instance of "promot[ing] enmity between different groups."

Rahul Gandhi was attacked by Purnesh Modi for continuing to support false claims on public platforms even after being found guilty.

The sessions court is scheduled to hear Rahul Gandhi's appeal on April 13. Purnesh Modi, meanwhile, criticised the Congress leader's actions and emphasised the seriousness of an MP breaking the law. According to Purnesh Modi, if an MP breaks any laws, it raises a lot more issues for society and the legal system.

The main issue is Rahul Gandhi's remark, in which he questioned why all robbers have the last name Modi. The court ruled that this statement was defamatory, and Modi accused Rahul Gandhi of saying similar things that might be hurtful and defamatory while posing as political criticism and exercising one's right to free speech.

The political climate in India is still hostile as the Congress leader is being sued. Purnesh Modi's response is the most recent shot in a verbal battle between the BJP and the Congress that has lasted for some time. The future of the Congress leader is in doubt as the sessions court hears Rahul Gandhi's plea today.

Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, and Tejashwi Yadav, his deputy, previously met with Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress. Prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP leaders, however, rejected the idea of an opposition alliance and pointed to prior instances of such experiments failing in the 2014 and 2019 elections as evidence.
