New Delhi: The Amar Jawan Jyoti, which burns at the India Gate in the country's capital Delhi, will be merged with the flame burning at the National War Memorial today. Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has opposed this decision. Rahul Gandhi has said that some people cannot understand patriotism and sacrifice. Amar Jawan Jyoti is burning at India Gate for the last 50 years. Rahul Gandhi tweeted and wrote, "It is very sad that the Amar Jyoti, which used to burn for our brave soldiers, will be extinguished today. Some people cannot understand patriotism and sacrifice. No problem. We will burn the Amar Jawan Jyoti once again for our soldiers.

The army officials said that Amar Jawan Jyoti will be merged with the burning flame at the National War Memorial on Friday afternoon, which is only 400 metres on the other side of India Gate. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the National War Memorial on February 25, 2019, where the names of 25,942 jawans are written in golden letters.

Amar Jawan Jyoti was established in memory of the Indian soldiers who were martyred in the Indo-Pak war of 1971. India had success in this war and Bangladesh was formed. It was inaugurated by the then PM Indira Gandhi on January 26, 1972.
