Rahul Gandhi slams party leaders for putting sons above party

New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi is learnt to have taken a strict view of top Congress leaders like Kamala Nath, Ashok Gehlot and P Chidambaram working towards promoting their own sons in Lok Sabha election 2019. On Saturday, during the party meeting Rahul is believed to have highlighted how the three senior leaders had pushed for tickets in Lok Sabha election 2019 for their sons. He reportedly told them that they had put the interests of their respective sons before the interests of the party.

Congress faced humiliating defeats in Lok Sabha election 2019, finishing with just 52 seats. Highlighting the fact, Rahul said some leaders insisted on their sons being fielded despite party leadership’s reluctance to do so. While it is not clear if Rahul took the names of these leaders and their sons, he reportedly did mention that top leaders need to watch out more for the party than their own sons.

After delivering its worst performance ever in 2014 at 44 seats, Congress was able to improve its tally by just 8, five year later in 2019. BJP, which achieved an absolute majority in 2014 at 282 seats, broke its own record adding 21 seats taking its tally to 303 in 2019 while Congress was restricted to 52.
