Surat: Former Congress National President Rahul Gandhi, who appeared before a magistrate's court in Surat on Thursday in a criminal defamation case, has categorically refused to apologize while recording his statement. Rahul Gandhi, who made controversial remarks on Modi surname during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, told the court that he was sarcastic. He also said that he does not remember much about it anymore.

According to media reports, Rahul Gandhi told the court, "I did not intend to target any community. I was only tightening the satire during the elections. I don't even remember much about it. Rahul Gandhi's lawyer also reportedly said his clients would not apologize. The next hearing in the case will be held on July 11.''

An MLA from Gujarat had filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi. BJP MLA from Surat Purnesh Modi had filed a complaint against Gandhi in April 2019 under sections 499 and 500 of the IPC. A week ago, Surat Chief Judicial Magistrate AN Dave had ordered Gandhi to be present in the court on June 24 to file a final statement in the case.
