MUMBAI: In the ever-changing weather of Maharashtra, the India Meteorological Department has issued a concerning alert. Today, the districts of Thane, Raigad, Pune, and Palghar are under a 'Red' alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Additionally, Mumbai, Ratnagiri, and Satara are placed under an orange alert.
The situation is so severe that authorities have ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in Thane and Palghar districts to ensure the safety of students. Palghar district has even activated the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, with 23 members on standby to tackle any emergency situations arising from the torrential downpours.
Unfortunately, the unpredictable weather has already led to tragic consequences. Three individuals lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra's Palghar district, which has been facing heavy rainfall for three consecutive days.
Adding to the distress, a devastating landslide struck Maharashtra's Raigad district, claiming the lives of at least 16 people in a remote hilly tribal village. The NDRF, in a brave rescue mission, managed to save 21 individuals, but the search and rescue operation had to be halted due to the continuous downpour. This incident is reminiscent of a tragic landslide in 2014, which claimed 153 lives in the Malin village of Pune district.
The situation remains unpredictable and highly challenging for the residents and authorities alike. It's crucial for everyone to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines issued by the authorities during this period of intense rainfall and potential natural disasters.
