New Delhi: According to a review report by Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu, eight department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees improved their performance in terms of meetings and member attendance from September 2020 to September 2021, compared to 2017-18.

While only two Committees (Transport, Tourism & Culture, and Health Family Welfare) met for more than two hours per meeting in 2017-18, six Committees (Transport, Health, Education, Home Affairs, Science & Technology, and Commerce) met for more than two hours per meeting in 2020-21, according to the performance review report.

While no Committee reported attendance of 50 percent or more in 2017-18, three Committees on Transportation, Education, and Law and Justice reported attendance of 50 percent or more in 2020-21, with six of the eight Committees boosting average attendance in meetings throughout this time, according to the report.

During the 2017-18 fiscal year, the eight Committees held 134 sessions, with an average duration of 1 hour 51 minutes and a 44.87 percent attendance rate. The same was true for the 126 sessions held in 2020-21, which took 2 hours 14 minutes and had a 47.53 percent attendance rate. Despite the epidemic, this represents a 20 percent increase in meeting duration and a 6 percent increase in participation since March 2020, according to the report.
