New Delhi: MPs who have been consistently absent from committees related to departments can now be removed from parliamentary panels. This was revealed in the meeting of the heads of the committees with Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday. Naidu had expressed concern about the functioning of parliamentary committees during this meeting and complained of the absence of members from the chairpersons of the committees.

A total of 15 of the 16 MPs who headed the 20 committees of the Rajya Sabha were present at the meeting. The chairpersons of the committees acknowledged that MPs have political constraints and have to live in their constituencies as well, but those who are often absent are excluded from the committees.

Out of 248 members of the committees attached to the departments, 28 MPs have not participated in a single meeting till now. In addition, there are about 100 MPs who have been missing from two or more consecutive meetings. Not only this, the presence of Lok Sabha MPs in such committees is even less. Of the 168 MPs belonging to the total 8 Committees related to Lok Sabha, only 18 were such who were present in all the meetings of the committees.
