Patna: Union Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Tuesday warned to take strict action against onion black marketing and hoarding. He said in a press conference here that due to the severe floods in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, onion supplies have been affected, but there is no shortage of stock.
Ram Vilas Paswan has said that 35,000 tonnes of onions are lying in the stock of government agencies and the government is taking steps to provide onions at cheaper rates. Paswan said that in last season, government agencies had purchased buffer stock of 50,000 tonnes of onion and created buffer stock. The government, which has been agitated about the price of onions touching the sky, has indicated to take all necessary steps towards controlling prices.

The Union Minister warned the onion hoarders that the stock limit (storage limit) of onion can also be set if required. At the same time, with the stock of NAFED, the government has increased the speed of selling onions in the open market. On Tuesday, people were buying onions in queues in front of the Agriculture Ministry, where Paswan's office is. They were being provided onions at the rate of Rs 24 per kg.
