INDORE: Chasing history to become champion after 65 long years, Gujarat took upper hand against defending champion Mumbai on the first day of Ranji trophy final as formed bundled out Mumbai's first innings for 228 runs here at Indore's Holkar Stadium. At stumps, Gujarat were two for no loss with Priyank Panchal and Samit Gohel in the middle, trailing by 226 runs as just one over to play for Gujarat and they nearly messed that up.

Gujarat get their reply underway with Samit Gohel and Priyank Panchal, while Shardul Thakur opens the attack for Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Gohel was survived on the very first ball of the innings as Prithvi Shaw dropped a sitter outside edge to Shardul at first slip.

The last time Gujarat had won the Ranji Trophy, the season was 1950-51.On the other hand, Mumbai have made 45 final appearances and won 41 of them including last year when they handed Saurashtra a mauling in a little over two days. In fact, the last time Mumbai lost a final was in the 1990-91 season.

In the morning session, Gujarat skipper Parthiv Patel after electing to toss, decided to field first under cold and chilly in the morning which could help the seamers early on.

Gujarat seamers proved Patels' decision's correct as Mumbai go into the lunch break at 97 for two after 32 overs bowled. Gujarat with disciplined bowling to concede just two extras. for Mumbai, Prithvi Shaw remained unbeaten on 70 and Suryakumar Yadav for company

Meanwhile, begning of second innings brought another successs for Gujarat as Shaw was run-out for 71 thanks to mix-up shouts of yes and no between Suryakumar and him.

Then after, Mumbai lost three more wickets in the second session putting Gujarat on a drivers seat. In the second session, though the over rate was dropped a big, but Gujarat have picked-up four wickets in this session.

Abhishek Nayyar and Vishal Dabholkar in the middle helped Mumbai  to surpass 200 runs mark in 72 overs. Dabholkar's wicket open flush gate for opened the floodgates for Gujarat bowlers as they didn't let anyone to settle and bundled out of Mumbai's inning 228 in 83.5 overs.

For Mumbai, opening batsman Prithvi Shaw scored highest 71, followed by 57 by middle order batsman Suryakumar Yadav. For Gujarat, RP Singh, C Gaja and R Bhatt scalped two wickets apiece.
