Mahakumbh 2025 is nearing to its conclusion, with only two days remaining and one snan on the occasion of Mahashivratri on February 26. This also marks a rare celestial event in the night sky, with all the seven planets of the solar system- Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune to be visible together for a brief time.

The planetary parade is said to have begun in January 2025, where Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune already visible in the sky. But now close to February end, Mercury will also join the lineup of planets, leading to all seven planets in alignment on one side of the Sun with their orbits being in the same plane. The alignment is said to occur on February 28, 2025 coinciding with the culmination of the Grand Mahakumbh.

For those unaware, a ā€œplanetary alignmentā€ is when multiple planets are visible simultaneously along the ecliptic (the path of the sun across the sky). The term, however doesnā€™t has a scientific definition.

As the celestial event marks its observance during the ongoing Mahakumbh mela, it adds more to the spiritual depth of the auspicious gathering. Such cosmic occurrences increase the spiritual energy and divinity. The event has a deep connection to the celestial events. Even the timing of the festival is determined by Jupiterā€™s orbit, through Vedic traditions and Hindu astrology. Ā

When and where to watch the planetary parade?

If you wish to watch the celestial alignment, the best time is said to be during the twilight- that is before sunrise or just after the sunset. The planets are positioned high across the sky. Notably, five of the planets- Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn can be seen with the naked eye only.

As Uranus and Neptune fall last in the line, they are farther and dimmer. Therefore, you might need binoculars or telescope to watch these two.

This has to be a rare event when all the other seven planets of the solar system are visible in the sky. But astronomers say that such an event might occur in mid-August 2025 also when six planets can be visible in the morning. You will be able to locate Uranus and Neptune with optical aid, ideal conditions and necessary equipment.

Let us call it a once in a lifetime moment as the Prayag Mahakumbh is taking place after 144 years, and witnessing this planetary alignment upon its culmination makes it even more spiritual and divine.
