How about an easy, tasty and healthy dish to start your day in the morning? Well, there is one such perfect breakfast recipe that’s all satisfying and fulfilling – The Millet Upma. We make it with Bajra, the barnyard millet in English. If you are worrying about cooking millet, let us tell you it’s not complicated.

Add veggies, and make the dish rich with nutritional potion that will improve the metabolism of your body, at the same time work for the energy early in the day keeping you full. It’s rich in fiber, and low in calories providing you iron, calcium and phosphorous. Basically, a dish for all the age groups to savor that is ready within 15-20 minutes. And if everyone in the family loves Upma, then there is a yes for the Millet Upma as well.

Without much ado, let’s get going:

Firstly, we will take on the ingredients needed for the Millet Upma- ½ cup Barnyard millet, 1½ cup water, finely chopped onion, tomato, four beans, 2 tsp carrot, 1 tsp ginger, 2 green chilli, 1 tsp cooking oil, ½ tsp mustard, ½ tsp chana dal, ½ tsp urad dal (soak the dals well), 1 sprig curry leaves and some salt.

Now, let’s get going with cooking:

Firstly, we will wash the millet. This has to be once or twice, then drain the water from the millet completely.  Now, take a pan and add the cooking oil to it. Heat it on a medium flame. When it turns hot, we are ready to temper. For this, we will add mustard, chana dal, urad dal and curry leaves.

This will be followed with chopped onion, green chilli and ginger. Let it cook until the onion turns little golden-brown. Now, we add tomatoes.  After this, we will add the veggies – carrot and beans. Let it cook for a few minutes at a low flame. Pour the cup of water, add some salt according to the taste. Let the whole mixture boil well.

As it continues to boil, add millet to it. Mix it thoroughly and close the lid. Let it stay covered and keep cooking on a low flame for 8-10 minutes. Make sure you switch off the flame only after all the water dries up.

Your millet upma is ready to be served with some coconut chutney, peanut chutney or any other taste on the side that you prefer. Some people have it alongside sugar too. While serving, you can also garnish the Upma with grated coconut and coriander leaves. Adding asafoetida and pepper powder will also add to the flavor.
