"MGNREGA is providing relief to the weaker sections of the country": Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Political turmoil in the country has increased considerably over the past few days, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday, citing some information, once again praised the rural employment scheme MGNREGA brought by the previous UPA government and said that the weaker sections of the country are still getting relief from MGNREGA in the corona crisis. In a tweet, he said, "The weaker sections of the country are still getting relief from MGNREGA. It is mandatory to further strengthen the scheme to overcome the financial constraints caused by lockdown. No matter who the Government is, the people belong to India and the public interest is our responsibility".

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had attacked the Central Government several times over MGNREGA and has been demanding proper use of MGNREGA. In February this year, he had mentioned that Narendra Modi, who became PM in 2014, had "made fun" of MGNREGA, but he too had to admit that the Rural Employment Scheme brought by the Congress government had played a key role in "protecting" the people of the country due to the Corona crisis. He said the demand for employment in MGNREGA has increased due to the epidemic.

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was introduced by the Congress Government in 2005 as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (NREGA-NREGA). MGNREGA is a nationwide function under which 100 days of employment, daily unemployment allowance and transport allowance have been provided for adult members interested in each family. There is a provision of 150 days of employment under MGNREGA in drought affected areas and tribal areas. However, from time to time, the scheme has faced a number of problems like corruption, delay in payment of wages and poor wage rate.
