Coughing makes you feel so uncomfortable. It is so annoying when you are sitting in a quiet room and suddenly you start breaking the silence with your terrible dry cough that makes people turn around and stare at you.

There are some amazing home remedies to beat that cough!

1. Honey

Honey calms down a cough. It is a rich demulcent, that does an incredible job of coating and soothing irritated mucous membranes. It has enzymes and also antibacterial properties which can help with that cough.

You will need:

1 tablespoon of organic raw honey

Directions:

Take 1 tbsp of honey 3 times a day or as needed to control the coughing. Take immediately before bed if cough is disrupting your sleep. 

2. Licorice Root Tea

Licorice root soothes the airways while it loosens and thins the mucous, which helps to ease congestion. It helps ease inflammation that may be irritating your throat. It inhibits an enzyme 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase which regulates access of glucocorticoid (a steroid hormone) which slows the conversion of cortisol to cortisone. 

You will need:

2 tablespoons of dried licorice root
8 ounces of fresh water

Directions:

Bring water to a boil and place the licorice root in a mug. Cover with water and steep for 10-15 minutes. Drink the entire cup up to 2 times daily.

3. Salt Water Gargle

A popular remedy to soothe sore throats, salt water can ease the discomfort caused by a cough. When the concentration of salt is higher outside of the cells water flows out of the cells which then balances everything out. It helps to dislodge phlegm that’s stuck and allows you to get rid of it easily.

You will need:

1 teaspoon of salt
8 ounces of warm water

Directions:

Take salt and add it to water, stir until dissolved. Gargle for 15 seconds, spit, and repeat with the remaining water. Rinse with plain water afterwards.

4. Steam

Steam is really helpful when it comes to dealing with a cough, cold, or congestion. Steam loosens up the mucous and phlegm immediately. You can also add essential oils that will give you wonderful healing benefits. 

You will need:

3 drops of tea tree oil
2 drops of eucalyptus oil
Water
Clean towel

Directions:

Bring water to a boil halfway. Pour the boiled water into it and let it cool for 30-60 seconds. Now, add the essential oils. Lean over the bowl and get as close as you can and take in the steam. Use the towel to cover your head and breathe deeply. Do this for about 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a day.
