Ajit Khan, also known by his stage name Ajit, is a well-known Hindi film actor. He born on January 27, 1922 in Golkonda, Hyderabad State. His career extended nearly four decades, and he appeared in over 200 films. He attended the Government Junior College in Warangal, Telangana. Bashir Ali Khan, his father, was Osman Ali Khan of Nizam's personal driver. Shehzad, Zahid, and Arbaaz Ali Khan are Ajit's three sons.
Ajit started his career as a hero and became renowned as the lead actor in films like 'Nastik', 'Milan', 'Bada Bhai', 'Baradari' and 'Dholak'. His outstanding performance as the second lead in the 1957 drama film 'Naya Daur' and 'Mughal-e-Azam' in 1960 was recognised. Director K. Amarnath, who oversaw his film, 'Bekasoor', suggested him to modify his name into something shorter and they ended up opting on using "Ajit".
He fled his home to pursue his acting profession. He sold his college textbooks to travel to Bombay, where he began his profession in the 1940s. Initially, luck was not on his side. His first several films, including 'Shahe Misra,' 'Sikander,' 'Hatimtai,' 'Aap Beeti,' 'Dholak,' 'Sone Ki Chidiya,' and 'Chanda Ki Chandni,' all bombed. The majority of his films were made with Nalini Jaywant. Later, he began to play villains, and his debut film as a villain was the 1966 Hindi film 'Suraj,' directed by T. Prakash Rao. In 1973, Prakash Mehra's Hindi action-thriller film 'Zanjeer' and the Bollywood action drama film 'Yaadon Ki Baaraat' were released.
He died due to a massive heart attack on October 21, 1998 in Hyderabad at the age of 76. His oblivion started after a bypass surgery in the year 1981. Since then, he stopped acting, but the industry was unable to find a villain who could match his popularity.
