Renowned Former Assam Minister Sarat Barkataki No More

GUWAHATI: A well-known figure in Assam's political landscape, former Congress Minister Sarat Barkataki, has sadly departed at the age of 86. The senior statesman's demise occurred on Monday morning, while he was receiving medical care at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Barkataki had a distinguished career, representing the Sonari Assembly constituency in Jorhat district for an impressive 25 years as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). His contributions were not limited to legislative roles, as he also served as the Minister of Education during the final term of the late Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Expressing his condolences, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media, writing, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of the esteemed politician and former Assam Government Minister, Mr. Sarat Barkataki. He was a skilled statesman and a person of impeccable character. I had the privilege of learning much from him during our years as colleagues. His loss is a significant setback to Assam's political landscape."

He added, "My prayers go out for the eternal peace of this veteran politician, and my heartfelt condolences go to his grieving family. The funeral proceedings will be conducted with the full honors befitting his stature."

Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah also expressed his condolences on social media, saying, "The passing of Barkataki is a profound loss for our party. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time."

Sarat Barkataki leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication to the people of Assam, and his contributions to the state's political history will be remembered with respect and gratitude.
