NEW DELHI: According to a survey 'Status of Policing in India Report 2019', 50 percent of the country's policemen believe that Muslims are criminal in nature. The report was released by former Supreme Court Justice J Chelameswar on Tuesday at the Public Policy Programme of the NGO Common Cause and Centre of the Study of Developing Societies. 35 percent of the policemen interviewed during the survey said it was natural for the mob to punish the alleged offender in cow slaughter cases.

43 percent feel that it is natural for the mob to punish the accused of rape. The survey conducted in 21 states of the country interviewed 12,000 police personnel and about 11,000 of their families posted in police stations. In the survey, 37 percent of the policemen said during the interview that instead of minor offenses, the police of the courtroom trial should have the legal right to give a small sentence.

72 percent of the police personnel experienced political pressure during the investigation of cases involving influential persons. According to the survey, policemen work on an average of 14 hours a day, while 80 percent of the policemen perform more than eight hours of duty. 50 percent of the policemen across the country do overtime. Three out of five families of the policemen feel that the government house given to them for their stay is substandard. Reports on police reforms in the country are blowing dust in the Home Ministry.
