Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors have done a study which shows that 68% of the resident doctors, attached to leading tertiary care hospitals in Mumbai, work for 12-18 hours a day.

To understand the working hours of doctors, the study was done on the eve of doctors day.

Dr Sagar Mundada, president of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), said, "We had done a survey involving 800 resident doctors from four medical colleges in Mumbai to assess the stress levels. Out of the 800, 68% said that they work for 12-18 hours a day. Around 20% said that they work for more than 18 hours a day".

According to supreme court verdict, 48 hours is maximum time of work to be done per week.

"Sadly, only 5% resident doctors said they work for less then 48 hours a week. 51% said that they work for 75-100 hours per week, which is violation of the SC verdict," said Mundada.

Munanda added, "long working hours is the biggest contributor to stress levels in resident doctors. 50% resident doctors said that they felt stressed out often, while 25% said they often felt that difficulties are piling up so much that they are not able to overcome them."

According to Munanda, 31 resident doctors said that they had suicidal thoughts for over two months.
