Bathinda: The life of Locals of  Kanakwal village in Talwandi Sabo Tehsil of Bathinda District is getting more difficult due to an oil refinery. The locals claimed that the odour of sulphur released from an oil refinery on the outskirts of their village is responsible for diseases which have plagued members of their community since the day it was established.

The residents of Kanakwal told news agency ANI that they have been suffering from various diseases, including respiratory and skin, ever since the oil refinery was established on the outskirts of their village.

On Resident said, “We expected the refinery to change our lives for the good but that never happened, said one resident.” Going even further, inhabitants of Kanakwal claim that high exposure to sulphur has even led to the deaths of certain villagers and poses a grave threat to women, children and even animals.

Locals also said that babies are born with pre-existing conditions due to intake of the gas.

The Sulphur can cause irritation in the nose, throat and respiratory system of an individual leading to coughing and a tight feeling in the chest area. Those suffering from asthma or other breathing conditions are more vulnerable to sulphur than others. Sulphur if exposed to anyone in a poorly-ventilated, enclosed, or low lying area can even result in asphyxiation.
