A day after Congress faced a humiliating defeat in Lok Sabha elections, scores of party workers tendered their resignation, taking the onus of the loss and dismal performance. Congress Uttar Pradesh chief Raj Babbar, party’s Odisha unit chief Niranjan Patnaik and Amethi district president Yogendra Mishra and Karnataka Congress campaign committee president, HK Patil are among some leaders who have sent their resignation letter to party chief Rahul Gandhi.

Babbar, who lost to BJP's Raj Kumar Chahar from Fatehpur Sikri Lok Sabha seat said that he was guilty of not discharging his responsibility properly. "The results are depressing for the Uttar Pradesh Congress. I find myself guilty of not discharging my responsibility in a proper manner...I will meet the leadership and apprise it of my views. Congratulations to the winners for winning the confidence of the people,” he said in a tweet.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president also took the moral responsibility for the debacle and relinquished his post. “I too had contested the election, the party had given me a responsibility, I take the moral responsibility for this debacle and relinquish this job. I've communicated it to my AICC president,” Patnaik said.

Karnataka Congress campaign committee president wrote to Gandhi, stating, "It is time for all of us to introspect. I feel it my moral duty to own up the responsibility, hence, I submit my resignation from the post." Following the suit, Congress' Mirzapur district chief has also tendered his resignation.

Rahul Gandhi-led Congress party displayed abysmal performance in the Lok Sabha polls 2019, with the grand old party bagging only 52 seats. The Congress chief could not even retain his family bastion and tradition seat - Amethi and lost it to BJP candidate Smriti Irani by a margin of 55,120 votes.
