Dehradun: The Gaya team, led by Urban Development Minister Premchand Agarwal, is looking at the technology to generate electricity from the garbage in Germany, a similar project that has been stuck in Roorkee for almost 7 years. This project was also to be made with German technology. Corporation officials say that the file has been sent to the government. Permission was received from the Union Environment Ministry in 2016 to set up a Waste to Energy Plant in Roorkee. Under this plan, it was decided to set up the plant within ten months. For this initiative was taken on behalf of the Municipal Corporation by providing 4.04 hectares of land in Salier. The project was to generate two MW of electricity per day. With this, there was a plan to supply electricity to the city of Roorkee and the surrounding area. This was expected to solve the problem of power cuts in the city to a great extent.

Tenders were sought thrice from the Municipal Corporation after several hurdles for setting up the plant but not a single tender could be finalised. In this regard, all the formalities have been sent to the government by the Municipal Corporation, but for the last ten months, this file is stuck in the government. The officers of the corporation are waiting for this file to be approved. Under the scheme, two MW of electricity was to be generated from about 200 metric tonnes of garbage per day from Roorkee and the surrounding area. It was tendered many times, but problems in bringing garbage from other bodies other than Roorkee, due to many rules, companies did not come forward to tender.

Meetings on this plan were also held in the Directorate of Urban Development. After the tender was floated on behalf of the same company, the corporation sent the proposal to the government. Some more clear information was sought from the government on this. Since then the matter has been stalled. This project of Waste to Energy was also based on German technology. Now Germany Gaya team led by Urban Development Minister Premchand Agarwal is also looking at this technology in Germany. On the basis of this technology for 7 years, a plan to generate electricity from garbage is going on in Roorkee. 104 MT of garbage is generated in Roorkee every day. Along with this, it was said to bring garbage from Mangalore, Laksar Palika, Landoura, Jhabreda, Kaliyar, and the Bhagwanpur Nagar Panchayat area.
