Jakarta: Due to the sinking of a boat in western Indonesia, 11 people have lost their lives and 9 others are still being reported missing. According to reports, at least 78 people were on board the boat. Pekanbaru Search and Rescue Agency Chief Nyoman Siddhakarya has informed that rescue workers have so far recovered 11 bodies, most of which are women and children.Â

He told that, so far 58 people have been rescued. Many of these people fainted after being in water for hours. Footage of the incident being broadcast on local television showed people standing on an overturned speedboat trying to reach the fishing boat. Siddhakarya has told that there were 72 passengers and 6 crew members in 'Evelyn Calista 01'. Most of the people were returning from their hometowns after celebrating the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday with family members. The boat sank on Thursday afternoon, about three hours after leaving a port in Tembilahan town of Indragiri Hilir regency in Riau province.
Local police chief Norhayet has told that the cause of the boat sinking is still being investigated, but some survivors told the authorities that the boat suddenly overturned after hitting a large object while moving in strong winds. Two tugboats and two inflatable boats are said to have been searching for the missing since Thursday night, battling high waves in the dark overnight.
