Punjab: Strike by roadways employees, government buses closed for several states

Amritsar: Bad news for those travelling by government buses inside and outside Punjab. Punjab Roadways, Panbus and Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) contract workers have started indefinite strikes demanding regularization from Monday morning. With this, the service of government buses to Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh has come to a standstill. Punjab roadways are plying buses on some routes on behalf of its very low regular employees. It is also not able to cover too long routes.

On the other hand, contract employees have sat in the workshop and are shouting slogans against the Punjab government. The Union is demanding the quick confirmation of contract employees, quick restoration of dismissed workers in minor cases and inclusion of 10,000 new buses in the government fleet. In the morning, due to the lack of government buses, passengers have to travel in private buses. Private buses are witnessing more rush of passengers than on other days. According to an estimate, private buses are about 25 percent more crowded than normal days.

Punjab Roadways Jalandhar along with its regular employees have dispatched buses towards Chandigarh, Amritsar, Pathankot and Ambala. Routes to Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh including Delhi, Jaipur have not been able to ply.
