Roberta Metsola, a Maltese politician from the centre-right European People's Party, has been re-elected as the president of the European Parliament. Her reappointment, achieved with a significant majority on Tuesday, underscores her commitment to fostering inclusive politics.

Metsola, who first assumed the role in 2022 as the first woman in two decades to lead the European Union assembly, is known for her strong support of Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia and its aspirations to join the EU. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy extended his congratulations to her in a heartfelt message.

Of the 623 EU lawmakers who participated in the vote, 562 supported her reappointment, marking the largest margin of victory for a European Parliament president. Metsola emphasized the need for unity and inclusiveness to counter societal polarization and political violence, urging for a collective stand against these divisions.

Who is Roberta Metsola?

Born in Malta in 1979, Roberta Metsola has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2013. She was elected First Vice-President in November 2020 and served as acting Speaker following the death of former Speaker David Sassoli on January 11, 2022. On January 18, 2022, she was elected as the Speaker for the second half of the ninth term. Metsola is the third woman to hold this position, following Simone Veil (1979-1982) and Nicole Fontaine (1999-2002).

In her speech to the parliament, Metsola stated: "Together we must stand up for the politics of hope, for the dream that is Europe. I want people to regain a sense of faith and enthusiasm for our project. A belief that we can make our common area safer, fairer and more equal. A belief that we are stronger and better together. A conviction that our Europe is a Europe for all."
