New Delhi: The Rouse Avenue Court has ordered the framing of charges against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in connection with the Pul Bangash Sikh Killings case. The case involves the murder of three Sikhs and the arson of a religious site on November 1, 1984.

Special Judge Rakesh Syal ruled that there is ample evidence to proceed with charges under sections 143, 153A, 188, 149, 295, 380, and 436 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), in addition to sections 302 and 109 IPC. Tytler has been discharged from the charge under section 148 IPC. The formal framing of charges is scheduled for September 13, with Tytler required to appear in court on that date. The incident occurred in the wake of the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. On May 20, 2023, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a supplementary charge sheet against Tytler. Following this, the court issued a summons on July 26, 2023, which led to Tytler's appearance in court on August 5. He was granted bail on the same day.

The CBI's investigation has revealed that Tytler allegedly incited and provoked a mob at Gurudwara Pul Bangash, resulting in the burning of the Gurudwara and the deaths of Sardar Thakur Singh, Badal Singh, and Gurcharan Singh. The Justice Nanavati Commission of Inquiry, set up in 2000, led to renewed investigation directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The supplementary charge sheet highlights Tytler's alleged role in the anti-Sikh riots that erupted following the assassination of Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.
