Bollywood film actress Kangana Ranaut's controversial statement on India's "freedom in begging" has been demanded across the country and a complaint has also been lodged against her at several places. Several leaders of the opposition, as well as the government, have criticised Kangana Ranaut's statement. Kangana had recently said in a news channel programme that India actually got independence in 2014. Her gesture was with the BJP forming a government at the Centre. In Uttarakhand, Congress workers have lodged a police complaint against Kangana at two places in Haridwar. Complaints filed in Roorkee and Jwalapur have accused Kangana of disrespecting the martyrs of the freedom struggle. A police complaint was lodged by the Mahila Congress against Kangana Ranaut in four cities of Rajasthan namely Jodhpur, Jaipur, Udaipur and Churu. Jodhpur Mahila Congress Committee President Manisha Panwar said in the complaint that Kangana Ranaut through her statement disrespected the freedom fighters and the people of the country, which falls under the 'category of sedition.' In addition, the AAP had filed a complaint application to the Mumbai Police seeking registration of a case against Kangana Ranaut. It sought registration of a case against Kangana under Sections 504, 505 and 124(A) of the IPC. AAP activists have also lodged a complaint in Ghaziabad. Earlier, Shiv Sena had also said that Kangana should be booked for sedition and her Padma Shri award should also be withdrawn. Kangana recently made the controversial statement a day after the Padma Shri award was given.

Replying to Kangana's statement, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Mishra said that real freedom was achieved only in 1947 and such issues are raised by those who have the ill ability to think. BJP's Maharashtra unit president Chandrakant Patil said Kangana's statement is completely wrong. Patil said, "Kangana Ranaut's statement on the country's struggle for freedom is completely wrong. Nobody has the right to make negative comments on the freedom movement.'' However, he also said that he does not know in which 'sense' the actress made the statement. "The common man is experiencing true freedom after Narendra Modi became PM in 2014," he claimed. Now there is no one in the country who does not eat two meals a day. The Central Government is giving 35 kg of foodgrains to the poor for Rs.105. Patil said Kangana Ranaut can praise PM Modi's 7 years of work but has no right to criticise the freedom movement.

Earlier, Lok Sabha MP and BJP leader Varun Gandhi shared a video of Kangana's statement and wrote on Twitter, "Sometimes an insult to Mahatma Gandhiji's sacrifice and penance, sometimes respect for his killer, and now insult the sacrifices of Rani Lakshmibai, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and lakhs of freedom fighters from Shaheed Mangal Pandey. May I call this thinking madness or treason?" While Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, described Sukwarar as an agent of hate. He tweeted, "Padma Shri Kangana Ranaut is an agent of hate, intolerance and unrestrained enthusiasm. It is not shocking that she feel that India got independence in 2014. Hatred, intolerance, showy patriotism and repression gained independence in India in 2014. It is not surprising that such statements were made in a programme that the PM also participated in. Finally, today, the PMO has become a fountain of hatred that flows abundantly in our country."

Demonstrations on the streets in Mumbai and Indore:- Amidst demands for complaints after Kangana Ranaut's statement, some people protested against her on the streets and also blew effigies. Kangana Ranaut is also being demanded to withdraw Padma Shri. Descendants of freedom fighters in Indore burnt Kangana's effigy on Friday. According to the report received, eyewitnesses said that persons belonging to the 'Freedom Fighter and Successor Joint Organisation' blew up an effigy of Ranaut on MG Road in the city. They also raised slogans like "Hindustan will not tolerate Insult to brave martyrs," "Kangana Ranaut Murdabad" and "Throw Kangana Ranaut out of the country." The protesters also submitted a memorandum against Ranaut's controversial statement to the commissioner's office of the Indore division. NSUI activists also staged a protest outside Kangana's residence in Mumbai.
