Are you one of the 5.8 million people with diabetes? If you are that doesn’t mean you can’t travel. Yes its true! changes in meal patterns, activity levels and time zones can affect your blood sugar levels, but with some good planning, your trip can still be safe, fun, and hassle free. Whether you’re hitting the road or taking the plane.

Here are some key reminders to make travelling with diabetes easier.

Eat in Moderation

Spacing meals evenly throughout the day will help control your appetite and blood glucose levels. All carbohydrates affect blood glucose levels, so be conscious of how much you eat and opt for carbs that are more gradually absorbed. Eat less fat-particularly saturated fat. Try unsaturated fats and oils, especially. Aim for at least five portions of fruit and vegetables everyday to give your body the vitamins, minerals and fibre it needs.

Stay hydrated

People with diabetes have an increased risk of dehydration as high blood glucose levels lead to decreased hydration in the body. Dehydration can be treated by taking on board fluids. Water is ideal because it has no additional sugar. If dehydration is more severe, and you require medical help, you may be given additional electrolytes which maybe lost from the body through dehydration.

Check glucose levels

When travelling carry all of your diabetes supplies in your luggage. Checking blood glucose levels before and after walking tours and other physical activities can help you notice changes and patterns you might not see at home. Always carry a source of glucose such as hard candy, glucose tablets, regular soda, or fruits juice in case of an unexpected drop in blood glucose levels.
