The rupee lost 5 paise to settle at 74.74 against the dollar on February 8, owing to the dollar's strength in the international market and rising crude oil prices.

The rupee opened at 74.65 vs the US dollar on the interbank foreign exchange, with an intra-day high of 74.57 and a low of 74.80 against the greenback. The local currency finished the day at 74.74, down 5 paise from its previous closing.

The rupee had finished at 74.69 against the greenback in the previous session on February 4.The dollar index, which measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of six currencies, was up 0.25 percent at 95.63.

Brent crude futures lost 0.47 percent to $92.95 per barrel, the global benchmark.

The BSE Sensex ended the day 187.39 points or 0.33 percent higher at 57,808.58, while the wider NSE Nifty ended the day 53.15 points or 0.31 percent higher at 17,266.75. According to stock exchange data, foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on February 7, offloading shares worth Rs 1,157.23 crore.
