ANKARA – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan informed his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky that the initiative of constructing a safe corridor for the sea export of Ukraine's agricultural products is important to Turkey, Erdogan's office said in a statement.
According to the statement, the two leaders also reviewed recent developments in the Ukrainian conflict on Monday. As per reports, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country has made every effort to keep the talks between Ukraine and Russia going and that his government was ready to offer whatever assistance required, including mediation. Erdogan told Zelensky that Ankara is open to participate in the "Control Center" that would be built between Moscow, Kiev, and the UN, and hosting its headquarters in Istanbul.
On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke on the phone. According to the Kremlin, the two presidents discussed maritime security in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, as well as the eradication of the threat of mines in these areas.
Putin stated that Russia is willing to "enable the unhindered sea transit of products" in collaboration with Turkey, and that this includes grain exports from Ukrainian ports. Given the current issues in the global food market, the Kremlin believes that if Western sanctions were lifted, Russia would be able to export the necessary volumes of fertilisers and agricultural products.
