Moscow: In the midst of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a 36-hour ceasefire on Orthodox Christmas. But his own troops ignored him and on Friday launched a frenzied assault on war-torn towns in eastern Ukraine. The brief ceasefire announced by President Putin earlier this week was to begin at 0900 (GMT) on Friday.

It was supposed to be the first full ceasefire since Moscow's invasion in February 2022, but reporters at the news agency AFP heard gunfire shortly after the start of the Russian ceasefire in the eastern Ukrainian border town of Bakhmut. Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of Ukraine's presidential administration, said Russian forces also attacked Kramatorsk, the second-largest city in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine has also alleged that pro-Russian insurgents have also attacked civilian settlements.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko said on social media, 'The occupiers fired rockets at the city twice, a residential building was also targeted, but there were no casualties.' Ukraine has said that Vladimir Putin's order to end the war during Orthodox Christmas came after Moscow suffered its worst casualties in the war and Ukraine's allies sent armored vehicles and a second Patriot to Kyiv's aid. Resolved to send air defense battery.
