MOSCOW: The Russian Defence Ministry signed a deal on the delivery of Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles and S-500 air defence systems for Russian soldiers. The contract was inked by Deputy Defense Minister Alexey Krivoruchko and CEO of the Makeyev State Rocket Center Vladimir Degtyar.
At the ceremony, it was announced that "a state contract is being signed on the production and delivery of the Sarmat strategic missile system."
Alexey Krivoruchko, the deputy defence minister, and Vladimir Degtyar, the director general of the Makeyev State Rocket Center, signed the agreement.
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, announced in June that the first intercontinental ballistic missile system in Russia would enter combat alert at the end of 2022.
The Makeyev State Rocket Center created the Sarmat ICBM, which is produced by the Krasmash company (both are part of the State Space Corporation Roscosmos). According to experts, the RS-28 Sarmat is capable of flying across both the North and South Poles to deliver a MIRVed warhead weighing up to 10 tonnes to any site in the world.
On April 20, Russia successfully conducted a test launch of its Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk spaceport in the northern Arkhangelsk Region. At every stage of the ICBM's flight, the launch confirmed all of its intended properties. The Krasnoyarsk Region's Uzhur missile unit is currently getting ready to equip its advanced regiment with state-of-the-art Sarmat ICBMs.
