MOSCOW: Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, described the scenario surrounding the shutdown of airspace during his visit to Serbia as "unthinkable" on Monday.

According to reports, Serbia's neighbours have barred their national airspace to the aircraft of Russia's top ambassador, who is set to visit Belgrade.

"Of course, the unthinkable occurred, and I appreciate your interest in our assessment of these heinous acts. The right to undertake foreign policy has been taken away from a sovereign state. Serbia's foreign operations aimed at Russia have been halted "Lavrov stated to the press briefing.

According to the Russian news agency, Moscow has received several inquiries regarding "the reaction to some NATO members' unusual moves" that "hampered the realisation" of the visit.

Moscow has yet to get official explanations from the countries that refused to let the Russian delegation's jet fly across their airspace, Lavrov said, adding that  Russia will never take reciprocal measures that will worsen people-to-people relations.
