Moscow: After a student successfully presented a diploma thesis produced by ChatGPT, the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU) has requested that access to the programme be restricted. The AI-powered bot has drawn more and more attention for its capacity to generate text.

The scandal started when a graduate student from the university posted on Twitter about his use of ChatGPT to write his management diploma thesis.

The student shared his strategies for getting around text length limitations in a lengthy thread. He also shared tips on how to use the programme to produce a text that is coherent.

At the university, the thesis was successfully presented. The student acknowledged that his grade was barely passing but attributed it to other factors, such as laughing at the allegedly sloppy presentations made by other graduates.

According to the thread, the student spent about 23 hours total to "write" his thesis, compared to the several weeks that his fellow students spent on their assignments.

The Twitter community's reaction to the stunt has been conflicted. The student has received both praise and accusations for his inventiveness. Many users were so incensed by the trick that they complained in writing to the RGGU and the Russian Education Ministry, pleading with officials to look into the matter and completely revoke the thesis.

The university swiftly denounced the student and urged the authorities to impose restrictions on the use of ChatGPT for educational purposes.

Given that ChatGPT's creators have already limited access to the chat bot for Russian users, it was not immediately clear how exactly the RGGU seeks to accomplish that.

"While the use of neural networks and artificial intelligence in scientific and educational activities has presented a new challenge to the educational community, it was plagiarism and unethical borrowing that posed the biggest problem for universities decades ago.

This problem was successfully solved. The scientific community's top priority should be to find a just solution because both Russian and foreign experts have expressed concerns about this issue, the university said in a statement to Russian media.

The RGGU promised to conduct additional "analysis" of the thesis, both internally and with the help of the scientific community, in separate comments.

Aleksandr Mazhuga, the deputy chair of the State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education, urged the university not to revoke the thesis at the same time, claiming that the presentation had already been approved.

"In my view, the outcome cannot be overturned. But this is a crucial indication to our educational community that we must carefully participate in the thesis-writing process for our students.
