NEW DELHI: In spite of the post-pandemic market changes, Apple and Samsung together accounted for over 58 percent of the market in the first quarter of 2023, a report has shown.

In the first quarter, Apple shipped 10.8 tablets with a 35.2% market share, followed by Samsung, which shipped 7.1 million units with a 23.1% market share.

As per preliminary figures from the International Data Corporation (IDC), Huawei came in third with a 6.6% share (2 million units). In the first quarter of 2023, global tablet shipments decreased by 19.1% (year over year), totaling 30.7 million devices. The low cargo volume is now similar to levels before the outbreak. Shipments in 1Q23 were comparable to the 30.1 million and 31.6 million units supplied in the first quarters of 2019 and 2018, respectively.

"Tablet vendors entered the first quarter of 2023 with caution. As expected, both commercial and consumer volumes were low as macro environment remained uncertain throughout first quarter," said Anuroopa Nataraj, senior research analyst with nternational Data Corporation's Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.

The analysis predicts that there would be little sell-in shipment in the first half of 2023 as suppliers prioritise getting rid of their stock before the introduction of newer models. The number of Chromebook shipments decreased in Q1 as well, totaling 3.8 million devices, a 31% decrease from the same period last year.

Despite the decline in tablet shipments, research manager Jitesh Ubrani expressed some optimism because more suppliers are paying attention to the market. "OnePlus' most recent launch and the upcoming Pixel Tablet from Google are clear signs that there's appetite from the supply side," he said.
