SAN DIEGO: American Jessica Pegula defeated fellow citizen CoCo Vandeweghe in straight sets to advance to the San Diego Open quarterfinals and secure a spot at the WTA Finals in Fort Worth.

Jessica Pegula, the No. 4 seed, defeated fellow American CoCo Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-1 to end the night's play under the lights, and Danielle Collins, the 2022 Australian Open finalist, advanced to the round of eight by defeating Martina Trevisan of Italy 6-2, 6-4.

In her opening match of the week, Pegula defeated her former Top-10-ranked compatriot in just 69 minutes, winning 12 of the final 14 games after falling down early on (2-0). She also created personal history because the victory ensured Pegula's place in the singles competition of the WTA Finals, which get underway on October 31 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The victory served as some sort of payback for Pegula, the No. 1 player in the United States, who lost to Vandeweghe in three sets in their sole previous encounter in Charleston earlier this year. According to an article on the WTA Tour website, Pegula claimed her strategy for the rematch was straightforward.

"It's incredibly difficult when she's on with her serves and returns. My only intention was to attack and apply pressure to her serve whenever I could "Following her victory, Pegula was quoted as saying.

"I believed that all I needed to do on my serve was serve intelligently and be ready for a strong return. She has a lot of easy power, so she sometimes exerts pressure on you, so I was simply trying to pay attention to those two aspects."
