Most opposition to the Civil Amendment Act was seen in Assam. Recently Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal has said that NRC would have been error-free if the responsibility of updation of the National Register of Citizens in Assam had been entrusted to the state government. Sonowal said during a discussion on the Governor's address in a special day-long session of the assembly on Monday that people need not be afraid of CAA.

In his statement, Sonowal said, "The BJP wants the right NRC. I can say this with full confidence that if the Assam government had been entrusted with the responsibility of updation of NRC, it would have been complete and correct NRC. Since the entire exercise of NRC was done under the supervision of the Supreme Court, the state government has no role in the process of its updation." He said that the Assam government had provided its police force with 55,000 employees and security.

On the ongoing dispute regarding CAA, the Chief Minister said that people are protesting because they are being misled about this law. He said that nothing is complete about how many people will apply for citizenship. Speculation is not right. The CAA is a national law that will be enforced by the whole of India. There are no rules made yet. The state government has also given its suggestions regarding the rules.
