NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has asked the Jammu and Kashmir High Court to take a decision in the pallet gun case within six weeks. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Anirudh Bose took cognizance of the July 4 letter of the Registrar General of the High Court that the matter was listed before the division bench for Tuesday. The J&K High Court Bar Association had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court in 2016 and requested to stop the use of pellet guns on a crowd of protesters.

In its petition, the Bar Association said that people are being injured and killed by the use of pellet guns. A bench headed by Chief Justice Gogoi, taking into record the letter of the Registrar of The High Court, said, "We request the High Court bench to expeditiously decide the matter and pass the order within six weeks. The lawyers' body had filed an appeal in the apex court against the interim order of the High Court. In its interim order, the High Court refused to ban the use of pellet guns, saying that the Centre has set up a committee of experts to explore the alternative to pellet guns. The apex court had on January 18, 2018 said that it would await the outcome of the petition pending before the High Court.
