Republic TV Editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami has been granted 'interim bail' by the Supreme Court on Wednesday in 2018 abetment to suicide case. He and two others were arrested last week in connection with the suicide of architect Anvay Naik and his mother.

The judge bench comprising  Justices DY Chandrachud and Indira Banerjee pulled up the Maharashtra government over the TV anchor's arrest as they heard the petition via video conferencing. The hearing comes 2-days after the Bombay High Court turned down Mr Goswami's appeal against his arrest and the reopening of the case. "I do not watch the channel," said Justice Chandrachud, but asserted that if constitutional courts did not interfere, "we are traveling the path of destruction undeniably".

The top court also permitted the interim release of the co-accused Neetish Sarda and Firoze Mohammed Sheikh in the case. The bench passed the order after an urgent hearing given to the petitions challenging the Nov-9 order of the Bombay High Court which denied the accused interim bail in the habeas corpus appeals filed by them challenging their custody. The Court said that Raigad police should make sure the compliance of the order of release immediately. The accused should execute a personal bond for an amount of Rs 50,000/- for release on interim bail.
