Chennai: Many cases are coming up all over the country regarding OBC and SC reservation. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court today heard a case of 50% OBC reservation in Tamil Nadu medical colleges. During this hearing, the Supreme Court has asked the Madras High Court to decide on the petitions seeking 50% reservation for OBC students on state-shared seats in the All India quota of medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.

The same bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao said during the hearing that the case of Saloni Kumari is pending with respect to giving 27% OBC quota in terms of Central Law. The court said that the decision to give 50% quota for OBCs in Tamil Nadu based on state law cannot be acted as a hindrance for the Madras High Court. The bench asked the High Court to decide the case on merit, saying that the pending Saloni Kumari case will not affect any specific cases.

The apex court was hearing the petition including the Government of Tamil Nadu against not implementing a 50% reservation for students belonging to the OBC category in admissions to the state surrendering AIQ in medical and dental courses. The Tamil Nadu government had approached the apex court against the Madras High Court's order of June 22 to argue for the implementation of 50% reservation for OBC students on admission to medical colleges and it will be decided by the Supreme Court.
