SC Upholds Article 370 Abrogation in Jammu and Kashmir: Year in Review

The year 2023 witnessed significant developments in Jammu and Kashmir as the Supreme Court sanctioned the annulment of its special status, effectively splitting the region into two union territories. Notably, the Modi-led government scored a diplomatic triumph by hosting a crucial G20 meeting in the picturesque Kashmir Valley. However, amidst these advancements, there was a delay in conducting elections for the Legislative Assembly, with urban local body and panchayat polls put on hold.

This milestone year saw the apex court validating the withdrawal of Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 of the Constitution, providing a substantial boost to the BJP-led Centre. Despite this, regional parties such as the National Conference and the PDP, who were petitioners against the Article 370 abrogation, remain steadfast in their commitment to fight for the reinstatement of the region's special status.

Mehbooba Mufti, President of the PDP, expressed determination: "We will persist in our struggle. The Supreme Court's decision isn't absolute. Previously, the same court stated that Article 370 couldn't be amended without the Jammu and Kashmir constituent assembly's recommendation."

Omar Abdullah from the National Conference echoed a similar sentiment: "While disappointed, we remain resilient. Our struggle continues."

Meanwhile, Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party called the Supreme Court's verdict "regrettable," urging acceptance despite discontent: "We hoped the Court would acknowledge the sentiments and historical context of Article 370's inclusion. Unfortunately, that hasn't transpired."

Surprisingly, the public response to the Court's decision remained subdued, with life continuing as usual post-verdict.

Apart from the political landscape, the BJP received praise for hosting the G20 tourism meeting in Srinagar, signaling progress in the region. This initiative spurred developmental projects, enhancing Srinagar's infrastructure and tourism appeal.

While improvements in overall security were evident, opposition parties criticized the delay in conducting elections. Assembly elections, last held in 2014, and local body polls, overdue since the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019, were deferred without clear reasons from the administration.

However, amidst the progress, targeted attacks by terrorists persisted. Incidents in Rajouri, Poonch, and Kashmir Valley saw civilian and security force casualties, indicating ongoing security challenges despite overall improvement.

The year saw attacks targeting civilians and security personnel, emphasizing the continued need for security measures in the region.
