New Delhi, October 12, 2023 - In a major development, the security cover for India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has been elevated from the 'Y' category to the more comprehensive 'Z' category. The decision, initiated by the Union Home Ministry, comes in the wake of a crucial Intelligence Bureau (IB) report that emphasized the necessity of heightened security measures for the esteemed diplomat.

The Intelligence Bureau, India's paramount internal security and counter-intelligence agency, recommended the enhancement of security provisions for the External Affairs Minister, citing undisclosed security concerns. This move marks a notable change in Jaishankar's security detail, ensuring that he receives more extensive protection during his official duties and travels.

As part of this upgradation, the responsibility for the minister's security has been transferred from the Delhi Police to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Under the previous 'Y' category security cover, S. Jaishankar, aged 68, had been safeguarded by a team of armed personnel from the Delhi Police.

With the new 'Z' category security cover in place, S. Jaishankar will benefit from a substantial security contingent consisting of approximately 14 to 15 armed commandos. These security personnel will rotate in shifts to provide round-the-clock protection wherever the minister goes within the country.

The CRPF, known for its proficiency in safeguarding VIPs and dignitaries, already oversees the security of 176 other protectees, including prominent figures like Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. This step reflects the government's unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of key officials and leaders while they execute their responsibilities on behalf of the nation.
